Without a vignette in Switzerland: fines and checks
Last checked: 4 November 2026
Anyone driving on a Swiss motorway or expressway without a valid vignette has to pay a fine and buy the vignette on the spot.
How much is the fine?
- Fine: CHF 200 (as of 2026).
- In addition, the vignette must be bought immediately (CHF 40).
- If both the towing vehicle and the trailer have no vignette, the fine is due twice.
Who checks?
Checks are made by the customs authorities and the police, at border crossings and on the road. The e-vignette is checked using the licence plate. During a targeted check in Basel on 20 May 2026, 50 of 1,292 vehicles checked had no valid vignette.
What applies to foreign drivers?
Anyone not resident in Switzerland who does not pay the fine on the spot must deposit the amount or provide other security.
Vignette required from the border
The vignette is usually required from the border. Only at the motorway customs offices of Basel/St. Louis, Rheinfelden and Kreuzlingen may you drive to the first exit without a vignette. More in Where the vignette applies.
The plate must be right too
An e-vignette only protects you if it is registered for the right plate. How to correct a typo: Correcting the licence plate.
