Where does the vignette apply? Tunnels and car trains

Last checked: 4 November 2026

The vignette applies on the national roads: Switzerland’s motorways and expressways (green signs). Cantonal and local roads need no vignette.

From the border

The vignette is usually required right from the border. Exceptions: at the motorway customs offices of Basel/St. Louis, Rheinfelden and Kreuzlingen you may drive to the first exit without a vignette.

Gotthard and San Bernardino

The Gotthard road tunnel (A2) and the San Bernardino tunnel (A13) are on national roads. With the vignette there are no extra charges.

Not included in the vignette

  • Great St Bernard tunnel (link to Italy): its own tunnel toll.
  • Munt la Schera tunnel (towards Livigno): its own toll.
  • Car trains through the Lötschberg, Furka and Vereina: the trip is paid separately.

You pay these on the spot; they are included neither in the vignette nor in our order.

Over 3.5 t

Vehicles over 3.5 t need no vignette but pay the heavy vehicle charge. Trailers need a vignette of their own, see Trailers, caravans and motorcycles.

You can order the e-vignette online with us.
