E-vignette or sticker vignette?
Last checked: 4 November 2026
The Swiss motorway vignette comes in two forms: as an e-vignette (digital, linked to the licence plate) and as a sticker on the windscreen. Price and validity are the same.
How the e-vignette works
- The e-vignette is registered for a licence plate. Nothing is stuck on the windscreen.
- It is valid as soon as it is bought.
- Checks are made using the licence plate.
Almost half of all vignettes are now bought digitally, a large share of them by drivers with foreign plates.
The main differences
| E-vignette | Sticker | |
|---|---|---|
| Linked to | the licence plate | the vehicle (windscreen) |
| New vehicle, same plate | remains valid | new vignette needed |
| Interchangeable plate | one vignette for all vehicles with that plate | one vignette per vehicle |
| Purchase | online | at points of sale |
What if you change your vehicle?
If the plate stays the same, the e-vignette automatically covers the new vehicle. If both the vehicle and the plate change, the e-vignette cannot be transferred. More in Correcting the licence plate and refunds.
What to watch out for
The plate must be entered correctly: a foreign plate can be corrected only once and only within 24 hours of purchase. Spaces and hyphens do not matter.
